Introduction

I am an experienced map maker working across both print and digital. Maps offer a powerful platform for impactful storytelling. Online, I have created numerous maps for a variety of clients, helping them tell their stories on a truly global scale.

In print, my maps have been featured in Direction of Travel, a magazine I edit about the culture of flying. In addition to designing these print maps, I also I also do the research behind the stories they tell.

Overview

Pope John Paul II regularly consecrated—or kissed—the tarmac at airports upon arrival during his many travels. These moments were often captured by TV crews and photographers.

For this project, I carefully researched and mapped all overseas trips undertaken during his papacy. Wherever photographs were available, these locations have been marked as confirmed kisses; others are assumed.

Background

This map charts the routes of all known aircraft stowaways since 1946. It depicts each journey, mapping out the voyage of individuals who have fled their country by hiding in the landing gear compartment of an aircraft.

The design is inspired Pan Am route map from the 1950s. The map outlines every known stowaway journey alongside snippets of stories about some of the most famous stowaways.

Introduction

You can circumnavigate the globe by plane using a variety of routes. This map charts some of the most interesting journeys that have been undertaken.

The map uses two polar perspectives: one centred on the North Pole and the other focused on the South Pole. Using these views, I carefully designed routes that criss-cross the world, illustrating the different paths these journeys can take.

Routes via Gander

Air routes that utilised Gander

Background

In the early years of commercial aviation, airlines used Gander in Newfoundland as a refuelling stop before crossing the Atlantic or continuing to Europe. During the Cold War, Gander became a geopolitical hotspot, with Aeroflot and American airlines meeting on the tarmac of this neutral airport.

For this map, I researched dozens of airline timetables from the period, carefully recording every airline that used Gander. Each airline's routes were meticulously mapped out, and the final design was inspired by route maps from that era.
